Free daily web-content  •  Both first and last step

It's often happens, when good site with valuable and interesting information loses its popularity just becasue of lack of information update. Frequently, there are impartial reasons: for example, if stated information hardly doesn't want to change. For example, Mississippi flows into the Gulf of Mexico, and has no plans to flow someplace another. How to make people visit a page telling about Mississippi? The answer is very simple. Something new must be published on this page every day. Where this "something new" could be obtained? Answer for this question is a bit more complicated, but it exists. It's neccessary to find something or someone, that will deliver an everyday-changing content for you. It would be nice, if it'll be free. Despite this advice looks Utopian, it's real.

It's turned out, that there are lots of sources of free daily content in the internet. They can be found by "free daily website content" query, addressed to Google. Of course, the final choose depends on you, but most of all I like The Free Dictionary because it's not only provides a lot of free daily content, but it contains a huge collection of dictionaries. And this feature is prove useful for us.

Getting the free content is so simple, that we'll need just one step instead of three. So, let's begin.

First of all, visit www.thefreedictionary.com/lookup.htm and take a look on what this site can offer. Ignore Option 1, since it's just the offer to put search block of The Free Dictionary on our page. We don't need this, later we'll se why. Go to the Option 2.1, and choose information, that we want to see on our page. Hangman game needs to be swept aside, since we want to anybody read something on our page, and, finally, to make people read our very important information about Mississippi. I think, that Word of the Day, Spelling Bee and Match Up are looking inappropriate for the page with text content. So, Article of the Day, This day in history, Today's burthday and In the News and Quote of the Day are left. This set is quite interesting. I'm looking in fairly often to read this stuff. In Content section choose needed blocks, the others must be cruelly dropped out. Choose New windows in "Open in" option, to make links from the blocks open in new window or tab of the browser (we don't want visitor to leave our site, aren't we?). It's better to choose Inherit for Font, to make font settings automatically apply to imported blocks. Choose width to your taste, depending on the page, on which we're going to place our blocks. I've chosen Fit (100%) option. Then, choose colors of the blocks, depending to your test and your page. By the way, blocks right to the form automatically show all modification, that we make, so the tuning is easy.

Now, let's look, if something interesting is on the settings page. Option 2.2 gives the same content, but with pictures. It is for sites, for which scripting is not possible. Option 2.3 gives this content without any design, so, if the layout in Option 2.1 does not suit you, you can work a little, and build raw-content in your environment.

Below, we see some more interesting options. Option 3 allows to export some variants of free content in RSS feeds, and Option 4 allows to add some off-site RSS/Atom feed to our personal page on The Free Dictionary site.

Now, the most interesting. Remember, we ignored the ability to put dictionaty search block? It's turned out, that The Free Dictionary allows very simple way to look up word from a page. It's enough to doubleclick any word on the page, and opened window will show full article on this word. All, that you need is to add link to a script and add a handler on double click event. How it is work, you can see on the sample page. Just double click on any word.

In conclusion, I need to note, that content is provided dinamically, so Google can't see it, so it can'be either translated by Google Translate, or used as a context for Google Adsense.
